Google's Android Breaking Into the Mobile Phone Market

October this year will bring the release of Android - Google's first open source mobile platform. Excited mobile fundis will be getting their first sneak peek on Tueday next week.

This software platform has been designed to support all normal mobile phone hardware functions such as SMS, web browsing, cameras and everything else a smart phone user could want...with an an interesting new addition.

Android platform prospective developers will be able to download Android SDK, a free software development kit to create Java applications for the Google newborn. We see this is as Google giving people far more control over phone functionality than ever before.

While the pressure is on to make sure that the first phone supporting Android makes a good impact on the mobile market, a new approach has clearly been taken to increase individual phone functionality – something that has been lacking. This could prove to be a very exciting time for the mobile wholesale industry, and the mobile industry in general. It's possible that a new market segment will open up. We are looking forward to seeing the results on gsmExchange. It will also be interesting to see how the competition will respond. Traders on our platform of the current smart phone kings, the iPhone, should have some ideas or opinions regarding this and we'd like to hear from you.

The first phone using the Android platform will be T-Mobile's HTC Dream. The unveiling will take place on the 23rd of September 2008, with the phones going on sale in the US by late next month. Watch this space.
